DMZ beginner's guide: plan your first Hajin run

Make your first deployment a short learning trip. Pick one achievable job, take equipment you can afford to replace, and practice getting home. A small bag brought back with a clear lesson is a useful start. You can build toward ambitious runs after the basic loop feels familiar.

Your first-run checklist

  1. Before deploying, read your current Order and choose one small goal.
  2. Check your selected Operator, weapon, ammunition, protection and medical supplies.
  3. Agree on a meeting point and an exit plan with your squad.
  4. On arrival, orient yourself on the Tac-Map before chasing a marker.
  5. Collect useful supplies, reassess your route, and leave while you still have options.

01 / FIELD NOTES

Understand what you are trying to do

Verified mechanics: MW4 DMZ takes place in Hajin and mixes AI enemies with rival players. You can deploy solo or with a squad. Your activities can include Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and exploration.

Our advice: choose a first-run goal you can explain in one sentence, such as learning the route between your arrival area and an exit. Avoid measuring success by kills or the value of every item. Learning when to turn back is a skill worth practicing early.

Check these before you deploy

Verified mechanics: the FOB is your preparation hub. DMZ Orders introduce the mode's systems. The Ready Up menu offers a Free Loadout. Gear stored in the Stash stays at the FOB.

Our advice: pause at Ready Up and inspect the actual kit rather than assuming the previous run left you equipped. Use an inexpensive setup while learning. Keep a spare plan for the next attempt instead of committing your favorite equipment immediately.

  • Read the objective wording carefully. Separate what you must collect from what you must bring out.
  • Check controls for inventory, healing, pings and the map before you need them under pressure.
  • Agree who leads navigation. Say early if you want a short learning run.
  • Check squad settings and choose deliberately whether to play alone or with teammates.

03 / FIELD NOTES

Read the map before following it

Verified mechanics: the HUD shows time until the radiation storm intensifies. Orders and their progress are available through the Tac-Map. Hajin locations have different threat levels.

Our advice: locate yourself, your goal and a possible exit, then think about the ground between them. A straight line can hide an awkward crossing or an exposed approach. Prefer a route you can understand and describe. Keep checking your surroundings while navigating.

  • Start with fewer external map layers. Add the category needed for your current goal.
  • Use community pins as planning leads. Confirm the current situation in the game.
  • Treat a low-threat label as context. Still look for cover, enemies and another way out.

Loot for a reason

Verified mechanics: police stations are associated with combat supplies, hospitals with medical supplies and residential areas with crafting materials. These are search directions, not a promise that a particular item will appear.

Our advice: ask what each pickup will help you do. Prioritize staying supplied and finishing your chosen job. If you cannot explain why an item matters, inspect its description when you have breathing room. Avoid lingering in an open doorway while comparing a bag full of unfamiliar objects.

  • Before opening another container, check whether the team is ready to move.
  • Remember one useful building and its approach for next time.
  • After a valuable find, reconsider whether continuing is worth risking it.

Make extraction part of the plan

Verified mechanics: active helicopter exfil sites use green smoke. Call the helicopter, hold the area and board to extract. Other squads can ambush exfil sites.

Our advice: begin moving toward an exit before you feel rushed. On approach, inspect nearby cover and likely lines of sight. Let teammates finish preparations before committing. If an approach looks bad, reassess while you still have space to choose. Reaching the marker is only one part of leaving.

  • Call out your intended exit and keep the team informed when it changes.
  • Resist a last detour once supplies or confidence are running low.
  • Stay attentive through boarding and wait for the game to confirm the result.

Recover, then give the next run a purpose

Verified mechanics: eliminated Operators become MIA. Recovery at the Operators station costs DMZ Cash, preserves Traits and returns them without gear. Dismissing an MIA Operator starts fresh instead. Unsecured carried items are lost after a failed extraction; upgraded backpacks can provide Secure Slots. Earned XP is retained despite death.

Our advice: take a moment before dismissing an Operator. Inspect the recovery choice and your available funds. After any run, identify one decision to repeat or change. Was the problem navigation, an unnecessary fight, or staying too long? Choose a smaller next goal that addresses that problem.

  • After success, offload items you do not intend to risk again.
  • Review an available recipe and choose supplies for a specific upgrade.
  • Set aside time to understand your menus between runs.

Solo habits and common first-run mistakes

Our advice: playing alone calls for a narrower plan. Observe before crossing open ground, avoid fights you cannot disengage from, and choose an earlier turnaround. Do not plan around a stranger rescuing you. With teammates, staying within supporting distance is usually more useful than racing ahead to claim another container.

  • Avoid adding a boss hunt to a simple supply trip on impulse.
  • Do not confuse a quiet approach with proof that an area is clear.
  • Check the current game's menus rather than relying on remembered MW2 DMZ rules.

Common questions

What should I do on my first run?

Our advice: choose one manageable Order-related task or a short orientation trip, then practice leaving. Add complexity once you can navigate confidently.

Should I bring my best equipment?

Our advice: begin with equipment you are comfortable replacing. Increase your investment when you understand both the objective and the route.

Does recovering my Operator restore the lost kit?

No. The official FOB guide says recovered Operators return without gear. Check and equip the loadout again.

Does this guide cover X01?

No. As checked November 2, 2026, official coverage announces X01 for Season 1, beginning November 6. This guide covers Hajin. X01's live routes, access requirements and escape procedures have not been verified here.
